WIT camogie team win on Ashbourne Cup
Posted: Mon, February 22, 2010

Prof Kieran R Byrne, President, Waterford Institute of Technology, has congratulated the Institute’s camogie team on their weekend success in retaining the Ashbourne Cup, the sport’s premier higher education trophy since 1915.

The Waterford team had two points to spare over UCC in the final held at Cork Institute of Technology. WIT had won through to the final by beating University of Ulster Jordanstown (UUJ) 2-10 to 0-03 in Saturday’s semi-final.

In the final, WIT led by 0-03 to 0-02 at half-time and an explosive start to the second half saw points from player of the tournament Katrina Parrock, Ursula Jacob, Stacey Redmond and Karen Kelly extend their lead and lay the foundations for a 0-11 to 1-06 victory.

The WIT team was captained by full-forward and Wexford inter-county star Ursula Jacob who scored 1-04 in the semi-final and 0-04 in the final. Previous successes for the Institute came in 1999, 2001 and 2009 and Waterford remain the only Ashbourne Cup winners from the Institute of Technology sector. Ursula Jacob, Colette Dormer, Patricia Jackman and Katrina Parrock were each included in the Ashbourne Cup All-Stars, a team of the tournament selection.

Congratulating the team, Prof Byrne said: “Winning the Ashbourne Cup in 2009 was a tremendous achievement by our camogie team. Retaining it this year shows that they have lost none of their competitive edge and retain a great appetite and commitment.

“Success at this level does not come easy and it is hugely to their credit that our team again won through against teams representing larger higher education institutions with greater student populations to draw from.

“Sport is a very important part of community life at Waterford Institute of Technology and we are very proud of all those who represent this Institute across a wide variety of individual and team sports. The latest success by our camogie team is particularly timely as work nears completion on the exceptional sporting facilities being provided at our West Campus in Carriganore in partnership with the GAA. It is also particularly satisfying that a number of the camogie team are recipients of our sporting scholarships.”
